Artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting business today in countless ways. In digital marketing, marketers use AI to analyze customer data and behavior, segment target audiences, and personalize marketing tactics, leading to better engagement, higher conversion rates and increased customer loyalty. AI can identify patterns and predict what consumers will want by analyzing data from social media, search engines, and other online sources.

"One of the biggest impacts AI is currently having on business is its effect on search engine optimization (SEO)—an integral part of digital marketing—particularly in keyword gap analysis," said Clarry Herrera, CEO of AGENIX Digital, at a media briefing session recently. Keyword gap analysis is an SEO strategy that compares one site to sites of competitors to find keywords that rank the highest and drive the most traffic. Keyword "gaps" are areas where a particular site could overtake and outrank competitors.

"Since we're a very data-driven digital marketing agency, especially in the context of our SEO projects, AI makes it easier for us to do in-depth keyword research and keyword gap analysis in bulk," said Herrera.

The tech entrepreneur explained the SEO process that first, his agency identifies a client's main competitors in an industry or niche. "These competitors' websites are what you want to analyze to find keyword gaps," he said. "Second, we select target keywords. We choose a set of target keywords that are relevant to the client's business. These are the keywords we want to rank in search engine results. Third, we use keyword research tools such as Google Keyword Planner, SEMrush, Ahrefs, or Moz Keyword Explorer to gather data on the keywords' search volume, competition level, and other related keywords.

"Fourth, we compile a list of competitor keywords, enter URLs of competitors' websites into the keyword research tool, and retrieve the list of keywords for which they rank. Some tools allow us to specify a competitor's domain directly, while others require us to enter specific pages or subdomains. Fifth, we gather keyword metrics. We collect data on each keyword, including search volume, competition level, and keyword difficulty. These metrics help us prioritize which keywords to target based on their potential impact and feasibility," he explained.

The sixth step, analyzing keyword data, is where AI becomes useful, added the CEO. His company's AI tool individually analyzes the top-ranking pages for each keyword. If at least four same website pages are ranking for different keywords, the AI tool tags them as a single cluster – which means that it's likely that a single article/page can rank for the different keywords within a single cluster. This enables Herrera's content team to create a comprehensive article or page with all of the information by a searcher.

"Furthermore, with AI, we're also able to analyze keyword intent in bulk – informational, transactional, or navigational – making it easier for us to map out our content based on our client's sales funnel," he said. "Before integrating AI workflow, AGENIX Digital was doing SEO 'manually' or without AI help. Staffers would process more than fifty thousand keywords, sometimes more than a hundred thousand. We'd take as long as four months to group multiple keywords together. Now, with AI, keyword gap analysis is done faster. In a matter of minutes. And with higher accuracy."

Herrera explained that after keyword gap analysis, the next key steps would be content creation, optimization, tracking, monitoring and analysis. "We develop high-quality content targeting identified keyword gaps. We ensure the client's content is relevant, informative and optimized for search engines and, of course, we incorporate the identified keywords naturally into the client's content, including titles, headings and meta tags. Once we've optimized content, we monitor the performance of the targeted keywords using SEO tools, we track the client site's rankings and analyze changes in the client site's visibility and organic traffic over time," he said. "Data analysis—this is where AI shines."
